These days, if you pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV or radio, you may hear or read about the advantages of driverless cars, also called self-driving or autonomous cars. The technology is simple to understand; using sensors and computers, these cars can drive without input from humans. This might sound like science fiction, but such vehicles are already on our roads and they will have a positive impact on our driving experience.
Traffic accidents are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the United States, and studies show that most crashes are caused by human error. The software that runs driverless cars is not capable of making mistakes. As a result, such vehicles will be much safer. One technology company has a self-driving car that has driven for over 7000,000 miles- over one million kilometers -without an accident; a better record than all but the best human drivers.
In addition, self-driving vehicles are good for the environment because they drive more efficiently. On a typical journey within a city, drivers deal with urban traffic by stopping and starting their engines repeatedly. This type of driving means engines work less efficiently and this causes a lot of pollution. Driverless cars, on the other hand, can communicate with other vehicles, which will reduce traffic problems. Autonomous cars will be able to start and stop their engines less often and travel at higher speeds.
Finally, autonomous cars will give passengers time. Instead of having to focus on driving, human occupants can focus on other things. The average time for commuting to and from work in the United States is about thirty minutes each way. Instead of using this time to focus on the road, passengers in driverless cars can read, watch videos or catch up on work.
The reading and the lecture is about the self driving cars and its effect on the quotidian human life. The author in the reading believes that self driving cars are beneficial to mankind mainly pointing out three advantages. The lecturer challenges the claim made by the author. He is of the opinion that driverless cars are not that beneficial as writer claims.
To begin with, the author argues that autonomous cars cause less road accidents. In the reading passage author mentions that, one company drove one million kilometers without a single accident. The lecturer, however, contradicts the argument. He contends that, as the autonomous cars are designed by the humans they are always prone to error. He elaborates this further by bring up the point that, driverless car actually hit another car and it was all over the news.
Secondly, the writer asserts that, such cars are environmentally safer. The author in the reading mentions that, self driving cars communicate with each other and cause less pollution. The lecturer position is antithetical to the author. He claims that, as there will be no age restriction on driving if the self driving cars are predominant, it will cause increase in the amount of cars. Additionally, such proliferation in the number will cars will result in more pollution as it will require more resources to produce.
Finally, the author posits that the passengers will have more time to focus on other things. Moreover he mentions that passengers can utilize their time by reading, watching videos and become more productive. The lecturer rebuts this argument by bringing up the point that, most people find driving relaxing activity. He points out most people enjoy driving listening to the music and relieving stress. On the contrary, if autonomous cars prevail, it will add another hour to work and most people spend majority of the day in work. He holds that it will add some extra hours to waste time.
Conclusively, the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on the autonomous cars. To sum up they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
