TOEFL iBT® Test 2, integrated writing

The reading passage and the lecture are about a decrease of the population of otters. Authors hold the view that main reasons of extinctions of otters is pollution. The lecturer does not believe that the author claims are correct. She argues that decline of the population of otters related to predation.
First of all, the author of the reading passage proposes that pollution reduces the resistant of otters to infections, so they be able to ill and die more likely. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that if pollution is the main reason of extinction, bodies of died otters should be on the coasts, but no one finds it.
Secondly, according the article, pollution also affects on other small mammal populations, like seals and sea lions. Therefore, the number of these animals is decreased also. In contrast, the lecturer makes the point, that orcas started to hunt on small mammals due to decrease whale population, that is declined because of human’s hunter.
Finally, the author claims that pollution theory can explain uneven pattern of otters’ extinction. So, in different of Alaska, mainly near coasts, there are far more alive otters, than at the depth. In contrast, the lecturer notes that orcas cannot hunt in shallow region. As a result, the population of otters is grater near coasts.
