TOEFL Integrated Writing Four day work a week

Essay topics:

TOEFL Integrated Writing: Four-day work a week.

The passage and the lecture, both are about employees working four days a week. The author of the passage is in favour of the idea and puts forward reasons to support his/her claim. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes the claim made by the author.
To begin with, the author believes that mandatory policies requiring companies to offer their employees an option of working four days for four-fifths of their normal pay would benefit not only the whole company but also the individual companies and the employees who decided to do so. He/she feels that shortened workweek would increase the efficiency of the workers as they would feel more rested and alert. Furthermore, he/she also believes that hiring more four day employees would not only accomplish the work assigned with better efficiency but also would decrease additional pay costs as the employees have to be paid only 80 per cent of the normal rate which ultimately would result in few overworked and error-prone employees thus increasing company benefits. However, the lecturer opposes the idea. He tries to justify his claim by stating the disadvantages of such a policy. He says that having a four day working employee will result in more expenditure as a lot of money would be spent on their training. Moreover, hiring more employees would require bigger officer spaces and more computers which would automatically result in more expenses. In addition, some companies would try to increase the expectations and workload for the four days employees so as to cover up more work thus resulting in increased stress and lessened relaxation time.
The author adds, when a company has to pay only 80 per cent of the normal pay, they can use the rest of the money to hire more workers which consequently would result in higher employment. In contrast, the lecturer has a different view in which he claims that although more additional jobs may be created, the companies would prefer five-day workers as they give more stability and hence the four-day workers would have fewer chances of promotion and lesser work security.
Finally, the author is of the opinion that the four day work week employees would have more opportunities to improve their quality of life by spending quality time with their family, pursuing private interests or enjoying leisure activities. On the contrary, the lecturer points out that the four-day workers are at a higher risk of losing jobs. These people would then be on the hunt for work, resulting in time and money for spending quality family time.
