Both the reading and the lecture talk about merits and demerits of ways to stop cane toads' population from growth. Cane toads have been transported from Central and South America and introduced to Australia to remove harmful insects. Although the reading states some ways to remove the cane toads, the lecturer finds them unsuccessful and provides three counter reasons to refute them all.
First, the reading claims that using fence to stop spreading the cane toads would be a useful idea since it had been applied once for reducing the rabbits introduced to Australia. However, the lecturer believes that whereas the fence would stop cane toads' distribution, the young toads and eggs could be distributed by stream flows and for fully spread of cane toads, a few number of their eggs and young toads are enough since they pass through the fence easily. Thus, national fence are not applicable.
Second, the reading states that organizing some group activities for volunteer works to collect cane toads and their eggs could stop them from spreading. In contrast, according to the lecture, untrained people are more likely to capture and kill native frogs, which are in danger now, unintentionally and since the young frogs cannot be differed by native frogs, volunteers might destroy them as well.
Third, the reading explains that controlling of cane toads population by designed virus would be a great idea. On the other hand, the lecturer asserts that this method would have some serious consequences for not only the Australian species but also for Central and South American species and reptiles since most of reptiles are being introduced from Australia to other areas such as central and South America and they destroy whole ecosystem. Spreading virus for nonnative Australian toads would cause the native toads of America die.
