Both the reading and the lecturer talk about the possible theories of reduction of population of sea otters, a mammal living in western coast of North America. Although the reading states that pollution was the cause of this reduction, the lecturer finds this explanations dubious and points out the predation was the more likely reason for this decline and provides three counter reasons to refute them all.
First, the reading explains that increased industrial chemical pollution is responsible for this reduction. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that if the chemical substances caused disappearance of sea otters, their dead bodies must have been found and washed up in coastal regions whereas there weren't enough evidences of finding Dead Sea otters along the beach to prove this point.
Second, the author mentions that pollution would affect whole ecosystem so this reduction has been observed in other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions as well. However, the lecturer opposes this idea, citing that orcas are predators that had preference to whales and since the population of whales declined by human predators, the orcas had to change their diet to smaller mammals such as seals and sea lions.
Third, the reading states that uneven concentration of sea otter population is another explanation that pollution has caused this disappearance since the pollution concentration is uneven in most regions. In contrast, the lecturer asserts that if the location of sea otters was accessible for orcas, their predator, they were more likely to be disappeared and hunted in those areas. Moreover, the orcas were enormous animals that couldn’t access to shallow or rocky locations in which the evidences indicates that sea otters population had not declined much.
