The reading claims that people are reading less literature which is threatening for the literature and culture and provide three reasons for support. However, the professor says that it is not necessary to read-only literature to enhance culture and refutes each of the author's points.
First, the reading says that reader of books regarding literature, which enhance our imagination and expand our understanding of language, has been declined which might exclude us from important benefits. The professor refutes this claim by saying that it is not necessary to read-only literature to enlighten us. There are other books: history, geography, and science, which is also insightful and increase our thought as well. Nowadays, people are reading these kinds of books which are also beneficial for enhancing human imagination.
Second, the passage posits that, instead of reading literature, many people are now watching television, listening to music which lower the level of culture overall. However, the professor explains that listening to brilliant music and good movies, which are more direct than literature, is also a great way of enhancing culture and enlarging the human mind and thought.
Finally, the author of the passage says that, because of reading less literature, lack of its audience and poor standard of readers, the publishers are unwilling to publish writing related to literature. But the professor says that this not the fault of readers. This is happening because of the complex and convoluted nature of literature which is done by the author intentionally.
