The reading passage and the lecture are both about the effects of teamwork. While the writer focuses on the advantages of having people working in a team, the professor doubts that teamwork would offer such benefits. His stance is based on a recent experiment carried out at a company.
First, according to the group project experiment, some members were observed to get free rides, meaning they didn't have to work much. It was only some of the members who put in lots of effort and contributed to the project progress. That being said, when the project went well, the recognition was given to the whole group and no individuals. This completely contrasts the claim made in the reading that some enthusiastic workers will have a chance shine and receive the recognition they deserve. Working in groups may not be rewarding for hard-working members as believed by the writer.
Second, it is mentioned in the article that groups tend to work at a faster pace since there are more people dedicating their expertise in tackling the task. The speaker casts doubt on this claim. He thinks a group of people will not likely to move more quick than an alone worker. In the example, it took groups a long time to reach consensus and a number of meetings in order to arrive at agreement.
Third, some dominant members might arise and have influence over the group’s decisions. As a result, the majority of the group might focus on the influencers’ ideas while ignoring the others who are trying to point out the issues with bad ideas. This contrasts with the assumption in the reading passage that teamwork makes use of members’ resources and allows more creative ideas to come into play. In the end, if the project fails, the blame will be on every one, including the influencers, the contributors and the free-riders.
