The lecturer casts doubts on the article that states Spartacus was one of the most appealing hero in history. She believes the supporting points made in the reading passage do not rely on accurate historical stories.
First, returning home was not the only goal when Spartacus led his slavery men to fight the Roman oppressors. In fact, in their first battle, Spartacus' army actually defeated the Romans and could have taken that opportunity to get back to their homelands. However, since Spartacus did not only seek to return home, but also wanted to revenge the Romans and gain wealth by taking their properties, they did not seize the chance and started to march around the city for those two different purposes. These were clearly over appreciated goals.
Second, the speaker rebuts the argue that Spartacus was a genius military leader. She points out that the only reason why his army managed to defeat Roman army in their first battle was because the Romans had taken them lightly and thus, only sent a weak unit of army to fight against them. On the other hand, when the Romans sent their highly trained and equipped soldiers to the battlefield, Spartacus' team could barely win. This indicates Spartacus was not such a brilliant leader as believed by the author.
Third, the story of how Spartacus rejected the offer from a Roman general in order to free Roman slaves was not based on historical evidence. The fact is when anti-slavery movement started to develop in Europe in 18th century, its writers and thinkers needed an ancient hero to act as an inspiration. Then, the character of Spartacus was chosen and role-played as a hero who liberated all slaves oppressed in Roman. Therefore, the claim that Spartacus was an anti-slavery advocate started from nothing rather than an inspirational story in a play.
In conclusion, the lecturer and the writer hold conflicting views on whether Spartacus deserved to be praised as a legendary hero in the history.
