The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is about the strange sounds called quackers. Having considered this, the author claims that there are several theories that can be attributed to this sound. The lecturer, on the contrary, categorically denies all three arguments mentioned in the passage, citing that there also exists some debate and scientists are not sure what caused them.
First, both the text and the talk discuss the idea that the sounds might be originated from the orca whale. In this line of thought, the passage explains that sounds of orca whale to attract a male for courtship is similar to the quackers sound. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that although this theory might be plausible, it is very unlikely. Accordingly, the speaker states that it is true that a large number of orca whales live in those regions, however, it is known that these whales live near the surface of the ocean and submarines traverse deep in the ocean. Moreover, the lecturer claims that if the whales were nearby the submarines, the sonar would have detected them.
Second, both the passage and the lecture put forth the idea of giant squid and their relation to the quacker sounds. In this vein, the author states that these invertebrate animals live deep in the ocean and quackers might be their sounds. However, the lecturer highlights that Russian quackers were detected in the 1960s and reports about it continued for 2 decades. But the sounds were completely stopped and disappeared in 1980. The lecturer further adds that squids have always lived in those zones and they are still living there, thus there is no reason to reveal that they stopped emitting sounds for 20 years.
Eventually, both the text and the speech explain the idea of military submarines and the possibility of being the quackers. In the wake of this notion, the author claims that the Russian submarines did not have the technology to detect military sounds by sonar. Conversely, the lecturer opposes this notion, mentioning that this theory does not hold up. According to the lecture, the sounds change direction in a swift mode and military submarine cannot change their direction in such a fast mode. Moreover, if it was the sound of military submarines, the sound of engines would be detectable. On the basis of the lecture, even today we are not capable of making technology to be so fast in changing direction and show no sound of the engine.
