The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about dying of an evergreen tree called Torreya taxifoha. The reading passage claims that there are three ways to explain the decrease of Torreya. The lecturer, on the other hand, not only categorically casts doubt on every single point raised by the author by citing three different counter-arguments but also believes that not of them are actually practical.
To begin with, the author establishes that one procedure is to reproduce Torreya in the same place in which that tree was able to flourish for many years. Conversely, the lecturer rebuts this idea, stating that this option cannot become successful and it does not have any huge impact on protecting it from declining in population. The professor mentions that the mentioned areas in the passage are really dependent on the climate variations and almost everywhere is becoming dryer.
Furthermore, the author brings up this notion that moving that kind of tree to a completely different place far from its Florida microclimate is an option. In contrast, the lecturer supports a mutually exclusive view compared to that of the passage and specifies that this option has been done for another tree in a new location. The results showed that this tree grew up rapidly in the new habitat; however, it killed off many endangered plant as well. Thus, predicting the result of the mentioned suggestion is not possible.
Eventually, the reading passage goes on to mention that the last way is to keep them into research centers. In the centers, the scientists are able to do some research on that kind of tree and also protect it. Notwithstanding, the lecturer explains that the research center is not a good environment at all and cites that since the population of Torreya trees that are kept in these centers cannot be resistant to disease. If a population of a tress wants to be disease-resistant, it should be large in population and be genetically diverse. As long as the population of trees in the artificial environment cannot be large, they will not also be resistant to disease and virus.
