The reading passage illustrates that a dinosaur termed Sinosauropteryx did not have feather and the pattern of fine lines remaining in the fossils display another possible and provides some reasons to support the idea. In contrary, the lecturer refutes the claim and presents that the giant creature had apparently feather based on the evidence which all oppose the mentioned reasons in the passage.
First, although the author states that the lines were not remains of a functional structure, however, the professor reveals that feather beautifully can be preserved in fly ash as it has been proved for other dinosaurs based on the remained fossils. This means that the feather structure remained well preserved during the decomposition process after being buried in volcanic ash.
Second, the reading claims that the dine lines are traces of another functioning structure named frills and not feather. Conversely, the speaker opposes the idea by demonstrating that there exist chemical differences between feather and frills. Whereas frills contain a particular protein, feathers do not. According the chemical analysis done on the fossils, it is a convincing evidence that the lines are remains of feather but not frills.
Third, the text posits that the lines are located along backbone and the tail of the ancient animal. This shows that they did not function as feather which is for flight. While, the professor states that function of feathers is not just flight. To put forward her idea, she exemplifies a male bird which has feathers in its backbone. The animal uses the feather for displaying to female animal for mating purpose. Accordingly, the researchers have found it out that the lines in the ancient creature were colorful including white and red colors. Apparently, they were remains of feathers at the backbone of the animal functioning as a displaying structure.
