Toreja taxifolia

Essay topics:

Toreja taxifolia

The reading and the lecture are both about ways to save a tree named Toreja taxifolia from dying out. The author of the reading feels that there are three possible solutions that can help preserve Toreja. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that these solutions are faulty.

To begin with, the author argues that Toreja could be saved by reestablishing the plant in the same area where it used to be present thousands of years ago. The article mentions that a microclimate of this area, North Florida, which is wet and cool, would be beneficial for the growth of the tree. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that due to the recent climate change, even northern areas of Florida are becoming drier and warmer than they used to be, so the new climate is no longer optimal for Toreja's growth.

Secondly, the writer argues that Toreja may be preserved by being planted in a completely new location where the climate is optimal for its growth. In the article, it is said that areas norther than the North Florida could serve the purpose, and that eventually, Torjea used to grow in the mentioned area a long time ago. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning how relocating plants could be a terrible idea. She provided an example when scientists relocated a tree called Black locust tree into a completely new habitat. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that this plant spread so quickly that it killed many other plants that used to live there before Black locust tree was introduced. Some of these plants were also endangered.

Finally, the author posits that research centers may save Toreja. Moreover, it is stated in the article that scientists would be able to not only protect the species, but they would also be able to perform research and eventually introduce the tree back into the nature, once they figure out what is the best solution. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that this idea wouldn't provide any results, either. She notes that in order to survive in the nature, species have to be genetically diverse, so that they could resist a possible disease. Those Torejas that would be grown out in the laboratories, will not be as genetically diverse as those that are found in nature.
