Essay topics:

Torreya taxifoha population and three ways to save them

The text discusses the decrease of the Torreya taxifoha population, and provides three possible ways which may be useful for increasing their population. On the other hand, the professor goes against these three ways, and provides some reasons why she is against them.

First, the text states that reestablishing the tree in same location which it could survive for past years can be a way to save this tree population. The professor refutes this claim and states that this way seems unlikely. She adds that some changes which are the results of global warming have changed the climate of microclimate regions. The professors also states that these regions has dried in the past years, and because of this point reestablishing the population of trees in these regions is not practical for surviving the population of Torreya taxifoha.

Second, the text claims that by relocating the population of the tree to new locations, which is named as assisted migration, scientists can save the population. It also states that in some areas which the climate is cooler, Torreya taxifoha population can grow faster and scientists can save their population by relocating them. The professor goes against this point and states that a previous experience of assisted migration showed that relocating of a tree resulted in a quick spread of the tree which declined the population of many plants and animals. She also adds that the consequences of assisted migration is unpredictable and is not a safe way.

Third, the article points that by preserving Torreya taxifoha trees in research centers, scientists can both save this tree and do so researches on it. The professor rejects this point and states that the population of Torreya taxifoha needs a large variety of trees to survive, and research centers doe not have enough capacity for this means. We can also hear from her that Torreya taxifoha trees can not resist against diseases in research centers, and as the result, this way is not a good solution.
