In the 1950s Torreya Taxifolia a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida started to die out No one is sure exactly what caused the decline but chances are good that if nothing is done Torreya will soon become extinct Experts are co

The reading and article are about the preservation of the declining Torrey Taxifolia tree. While the author argues and gives three ways in which the trees can be preserved, the lecturer disputes the claims presented in the article. She states that all of the measures stated are fallacious.

According the article the Torrey Taxifolia thrives in a microclimate of the forests of Florida. The author states that by reestablishing and replanting the trees in dampest and coolest part of the microclimate is a possible solution. The lecturer challenges the argument. She states that the microclimate areas have been affected by the larger outer areas of the forest. The increasing global warming, draining of wetlands and drying of regions have caused detrimental effects on the areas in which the trees thrive.

The reading gives another solution of moving the Torreya trees to an new alternative location. The article suggest that moving the Torrey trees to further north can help them survive. However, the lecturer assets that moving trees to new location leads to an unpredicted and undesirable outcome. She states when Black Locust trees were moved to an new location, the trees grew rapidly and outran the other tree species which were endangered to.

The author puts forth the idea that Torrey trees can be preserved in an monitored environment in a research center. In contrast, the lecturer stance is that the tree species cannot survive the diseases outbreak in a lab. The trees in research centres are limited and not diverse hence decreasing the chances of their survival.
