The reading and lecture are about the role of dams in global warming. While author of the reading argues that dams have a role in decreasing the global warming, the lecturer disputes the claims presented in article. Her position is that dams are fallcious and have deterimental effect on environment. The article states that the hydroelectricity is hundred percent clean without emission of carbon dioxide which is responsible for global warming. It states that reducing emission of carbon dioxide has outweigh the cost involved in environmental degradation. The lecturer challenges this argument. She states that dams destroy the ecosystem of nearby areas. Dams create major floods in the areas near vallies therefore destroying the habitat of many animals. The forest are source of curbing global warming as they absorb the carbon dioxide, but due the floods these forest are destroyed and no more green house gases are absorbed. Therefore, dams nullify any positive effect of not emitting carbon dioxide. The lecturer goes on to add that on construction of dams many vast area are cleared out. The dead vegetation that is left behind emits large amount of methane that has deleterious effects on the environment. However, the author asserts that the methane emitted from dams are compartively lower than the burning of fossil fuels. Lastly, the author puts forth the idea that dams can be an alternative to coal and other fossil fuels. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that constructing of dams require steel and concreate which inturn uses large amount of fossil fuels. She says that the transportation of these raw material will burn more of fossil fuels therefore the overall fossil fuels used for construction of dams in higher than any other modern day science project.
