The author says that Chevalier invented many events in his memoir to make his life seem more glamorous. However, the professor says that even though there is no memoir completely correct, but Chevalier's memoir is pretty accurate and has reliable historical source, and the professor refutes each of the author's critics point.
Firstly, the author avers that Chevalier was not a wealthy man as he claimed because he was borrowing money from a Swiss merchant. However, the professor says that borrowing money from others does not mean that he was not wealthy, and she admits that Chevalier was having a lot of possessions, and he was borrowing money until he would find a seller for his possessions. That's why; Chevalier was not poor.
Secondly, the author avers that there is many critics are skeptical about the accuracy of the conversations record in his memoir that he met and conversed with the famous writer Voltaire because the the conversation was written many years after the conversations occurred. However, the professor admits that he wrote that in his memoir that he wrote down every thing about the conversation between him and Voltaire. Also, Chevalier and Voltaire were living with each other for a period of time.
Thirdly, the author claims that critics do not believe that Chevalier escaped from the prison in Venice by using a piece of metal to make a hole in ceiling, and they believed that Chevalier's jailers were bribed to free him. However, the professor says that when Chevalier at the prison, there were many other prisoners that have more power than him and they could not escape. Also, the Venice government assumed that Chevalier escaped through the ceiling, and there is evidence that the ceiling got repaired after his escaping. Therefore, there is a great evidence that Chevalier escaped from a prison in Venice through a hole he had done in the ceiling.
