Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has b

The speaker argues that the memoir of Chevalier is reliable and accurate. This calls in question the reading, which states that his memoir is an amusing, distorted version of reality.
According to the speaker, borrowing loans does not imply that Chevalier was not wealthy as stated in the memoir. It could be the case that he had assets of high worth that need to be sold to get liquid money, and so had to temporarily borrow money for is partying and gambling habits. This is against the reading which claims that, a rich person that Chaveliar was would not need to loan money.
Also, from the lecture we know, that Chavelier use to write notes about the conversations he had with Voltaire on daily basis. That he used these notes later, when he was writing his memoir, is also supported by evidence. Whereas, the critics make a case againt these conversations, as they belive that Chevalier cannot possibly remember the exact conversation he had with Voltaire after many years. They donot mention of any note taking.
Finally, the speaker contends that Chevalier did escape the prison by making a hole in the ceiling with help of a metal shard. Many of the people who were incarcerated with him in the Venecian prison, were infact more powerful than him. There is no record of their escape. If Chevalier did escape by bribing jailers, then these more potent prisoners could also have easily escaped prison. The speaker also says that there is a document which states that after Chevalier left prison the ceiling of his prison room was repaired. From this she infers that he did really flee prison just as he mentioned it in his memoir. On the contrary, critics blame Chevalier of bribing jail officers with the help of his poltical friends.
