The lecture and the reading both talk about whether or not a four-day workweek is better than normal five-day workweek. At this point, the author states that idea will work and create more benefits for both employees and company, provides three reasons support. However, the professor explains that will bring more disadvantages and casts doubt on each of the author’s reasons.
First, the professor presents the negative side of decreasing company’s profit, refutes the reading’s general claim that managers will save more money because of higher concentration and alertness in working. In this case, the professor mentions that the company will surely spend more resources, such as bills for medical, insurance, and training, on running their system with the four-day schedule work.
Second, the lecture says employees will be able to apply other available part time jobs when they work only four days a week for eight hours per day. This confronts the reading’s claim that they will spend weekend for their family or leisure activities. In fact, the professor asserts that employees will have to choose working overtime to make difference or finish their five-day work in only four-day schedule which makes employees feel uncomfortable.
Third, the lecture challenges the reading’s claim that individual employees will have better opportunities when the four-day workweek is available. At this point, the professor mentions that positions of manager are only available for employees with five-day workweek. Consequently, people who work five days per week have more opportunities for promotion than other.
