The article states that working four days a week would be beneficial for economy, company and employee and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer explains that four-day workweek would harm both company and the employee and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading says that company can hire more employee while spending same amount of money. However, the professor states that hiring more employee would increase the overall cost. Since, each new employee must be provided with a room and a computer. Moreover, training and insurance cost of these new employees would be extra burden for the company.
Second, the professor states that shortened workweek does not reduce the unemployment rate. Because, company would try to force their employees to finish their work that takes five days to finish normally, in four days. As a result, company would not hire more employee to finish the same amount of work. This point contradicts with the reading passage.
Third, the article posits that working four days a week would increase employees’ life quality. The professor opposes this point by saying that this would harm individuals’ career advancement. Because, companies would promote five day employees and, in the time of downturn, companies would choose to fire their dour-day employees instead of five days employee. Therefore, employees’ job stability will decrease.
