The authors mentions that the compulsory policy which allows employees working in the United States to work 4 days per week instead of 5 days and believes that it would bring advantages to the employees, companies and country as a whole while the professor refutes that perspective and has the opposite viewpoint.
First of all, author says that with the reduced amount of salaries of employees who work 4 days per week to 80% of the normal employees, individual companies can raise their profit. However, professor believes that it adds the company's cost as more employees need more training and more office spaces and equipments such as computers. In addition, the cost associated with medical benefits or health benefits will also increase as there is not any different between the cost of the health benefits of four-day week employee and 5-day week employee.
Furthermore, author states that 4-day employee would make less costly error and are more alert while the professor has the opposite viewpoint, said that in 4-day employees policy, managers would expect more from their employees and this would raise their expectation which would lead employees work 5 days in practical instead of 4 day to meet the employer expectation. This means that employees in this new mandatory policy would work overtime which makes them unsatisfied.
Finally, author says that 4-day week work policy would result in an increase in employees' life quality while the professor refutes this opinion. He believes that this policy will increase the associated risks and stresses which results in reducing the quality of life. Employees would have less opportunity for promotion especially in economic recession. Management also would like to promote the management positions as they would need supervisors who can work 5 day per week. The employee would not feel security in their job. All this factor would cause employees in this new policy experience a lower quality of life.
