Both the reading and the listening discuss the work hours of employees each day in the United States. The author describes that there are three main reasons to support the idea that four-day workweek will benefit the company. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this claim and brings up three reasons and elucidates some evidence to refute what is mentioned in the reading passage.
First of all, the writer states that shortening the workweek provides more benefits for the company, due to the fact that the employees make fewer costly errors. Nevertheless, the professor points out that four-day workweek force companies to spend more. The new workers put much medical and training costs for the company. Furthermore, whether employees work four days or five days, health benefits are the same. Additionally, more human force means needing more off space and computers, which add cost to the company and cut into company's profits.
Second, according to the reading, four-day workweek would decrease the unemployment rates. While the lecturer brings up the idea that reducing the work days per a week, does not make any job available. As a matter of fact, hiring new employees is costly, therefore the companies can hold another option in this case, and may ask the workers to work overtime and even raise its expectations and request the employees to do the same stuffs in 4 days rather in 5 days. Therefore, four-day workweek not only add no new jobs, but also make the current jobs more unpleasant.
Third, the author expresses that four-day workweek provides a situation for the employees to spend more time with their families, which improves their lives quality. However, the speaker posits that four-day workweek increases the risk and reduces the quality of life, owing to the fact that employees might lose their jobs during the economic downturn. Besides, four-day workers may passed over for promotion, since managers must present all five days a week to supervise and coverage, the workers cannot expect to have manager positions in the company.
Therefore, the points mentioned in the reading do not make sense.
