TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The reading and the lecture are both about the working days of employees. The author of the reading believes that employees want to work four days a week, but the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that employees should work a five-day week.

First of all, the author points out that the shortened workweek would increase company profits. It is mentioned that the four-day employees would be energetic more than the five-day employees and can work effectively equal to the five-day employees, while they are paid only 80 percent of the normal rate. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He states that less employees' compensations do not mean more profits. Furthermore, he argues that the company need to spend more money for additional training, medical benefits, and computer equipment.

Secondly, the author contends that the four working days would reduce unemployment rates. The article notes that new employees could be hired at the 80 percent rate because of working time reducing. The lecture rebuts this argument. He points that they have to be many more job available. He elaborates on this by mentioning that the five working days are less expectation for employees.

Finally, the author states that the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees to improve the quality of their lives. It is mentioned that employees would have more time to balance their lives. This goes against the lecturer, who states that this way is the risks to reduce many qualities. In other words, this situation may cause to decrease the job abilities, lose employees’ jobs or pass over the promotions.
