The lecturer disputes some reasons presented in the reading on the advantages of teamwork in many organizations.
According to the reading, team work involves greater number of people with more resources than an individual which will lead to a faster response in accomplishing assigned tasks with more creative ideas to problems. Furthermore, responsibilities are spread across members of the group and no individual is held accountable if a project goes wrong. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this by stating that it is a nightmare to reach a consensus on making appropriate decisions among team members. He restates that it takes many more meetings for a team to come up with an agreement on particular task due to the differing opinions among the group. Moreover, when one or two people becomes very influential in the group, they impose their ideas on the group without considering the opinions of the other members. In a case when a project fails due to the poor decision of some influential members of the team, the blame goes to all the members not on the individual.
Second, the reading states that team work can be gratifying. Team members who makes significant contribution to the success of a task can be recognized. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this by stating that some members of the team can be nonchalant and make no meaningful contribution to the success of tasks and gets applause from the work of other diligent members because the rating of success goes to all members of the group and not an individual. This tends to discourage the attitude of the hardworking members of the team.
