The reading passage describes the reasons why one certain portrait attributed to Rembrandt was removed from official catalog of his works. The lecture, in contradiction to the Reading, describes how the panel of experts came up with the conclusion that portrait nevertheless is the original work of Rembrandt.
First reason named in the reading is that lady on the portrait is wearing the strange mix of white linen cap which could be worn by servant only and of fur coat which could be afforded only by a very rich person. As far as Rembrandt is known for his almost attention to the details, he would never paint a character dressed as such. However, the professor in the lecture explains that panel of expert did analysis of colors on the painting which discovered that fur on the woman's clothes was painted at one hundred years later that painting itself. It might have been someone's attempt to increase the value of the painting turning it into the portrait of reach aristocratic lady instead of poor one.
The second reason from the reading is based on manner of Rembrandt to draw light and shadow, and on the painting these elements are different from well known Rembrandt's manner. The professor challenges this statement saying that on original painting before the changes done hundred years later the composition of lights and shadows was different from what is seeing there now. In particular, the cloth was painted in simple, light color which eliminated face of the woman, and that exactly is a mix of light and shadow of Rembrandt style.
The third objective from the reading was in regard to wood panel on which painting was made. The panel consists of 3 different layers of wood which are glued together. And no other work of Rembrandt was done on same type of panel. The lecturer casts doubt on validity of this evidence, mentioning the analysis done by experts. That analysis discovered that wood from the layers has complete match with the wood from other Remrandts' painting - his self-portrait in the hat meaning the panel of self portrait was made from the same tree as glued panels of the portrait of the lady in white cap.
