In terms of how the great houses at Chaco were used, the reading and listening are contradictory to each other.
First, the writer makes the point that the big buildings were used for people to live in. However, the professor demonstrates a different idea that if the building were residential for people, there must be many fire places. In fact, the fire places in the building were only enough. In one of the houses, there were fireplaces for only 10 families, but there were rooms for 100.
What’s more, contrary to the belief in the reading passage that the Chaco structures were used to store maize supplies, the lecturer says that there were no traces of maize or maize containers discovered in the building.
Finally, the author states that these houses may be used as ceremonial centers. In contrast, the speaker refutes that there were not only a lot of broken pots, but also other things in the building, such as some building materials. It means these pots may be used for the workers who built the houses.
