The reading passage and the lecture discusses an interesting topic pertaining to the native's great houses found on the settlement of Chaco Canyon, in New Mexico. While the reading passage provide three possible theories about the use of these buildings, the lecture casts doubts of every theory provided by the reading passage with supporting arguments.
First of all, the reading passages suggests that one possible use of the great houses was as residential building. On the contrary, the lecture opposes to this idea. The lecture explains that, even though, from the outside, the structure are similar as modern building apartments, from the inside, many features are missing to accept this houses as places to live. For example, the lecture points out that there is not evidence of many fireplaces or rooms where hundred of families would be living comfortably.
Second, the reading passage proposes that the great houses could be used as store places where the main crops where gathered during long periods of time. On the contrary, the lecture claims that, again, there is no solid evidence to support this theory. According to the lecture, scientists could not uncovered rest of crops or corn as remainders in the settlement.
Finally, the reading passage proposes that a third possibility of the use of the houses was as ceremonial center. Again, the lecture, refutes this possibility by arguing that no evidence was found to support this claim. In fact, the lecture explains, that many rests were found in the settlement beside rests of pots, like stones and constructions tools. In consequences, the lecture, finally, concludes that the houses could be used as places for construction.
