The accuracy of Chevalier’s memoir is the controversial discussion whether it is exaggerate to make his life more exiting then the reality. The reading and the lecture discuss about this memoir. The author believes that the claim made in memoir is not accurate and provides three reasons to support. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees with the claims made in the article.
To begin with, the author cites that though Chevalier spend lot of money on parties and gambling while he lived in Switzerland, he was not affluent because he had to borrow money for others. Furthermore, the author points out that the conversation in memoir definitely cannot be accurate because it is impossible for someone to memorize all the detail of conversions happened many years ago. However, the lecturer disagrees with the argument. She provides an evidence that Chevalier always noted his conversation every day and kept them for sever year. Chevalier then, purposely used his notes as reference in his memoir.

The author believe that Chevalier bribed officers to help free him, instead of break out of his cell as written in his memoir. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She explains that although many people in the prison at that time are more powerful and better connect with politician, they cannot bribe the officer to help free them out of prison. Moreover, she claims that there is an evidence that after Chevalier escape from prison, his cell had to be repaired.
