The passage and the lecture are both mainly about the accuracy of Chevaliers memoir. The passage doubt that the Chevalier distorted or invented some details in the memoir for three suspectable events, while the lecture argues that there are reasonable explanation exist.

To begin with, the passage points out that the Chevalier borrowed money from a Swiss merchant while he was living in Switzerland, thus, it is doubtable that the Chevalier was rich in that period. On the other hand, the lecture states that the Chevalier sells his goods to become rich. In this case, when he run out of the money because of the expend on parties and gambling, and meanwhile, the cash cannot achieve from goods exchanging immediately, he is most likely to borrow money from others.

Besides, the passage indicates that the Chevalier wrote his conversations with Voltaire after several years, so that the articles cannot be accurate. On the contrary, the lecture proves that the Chevalier consulted with Voltaire every night in the period and he has already recorded some notes after some paricular conversation. When he wrote the conversations, he consulted the notes.

Meanwhile, the passage states that the Chevalier could use his relationship to escape from the poison, so the escape experience may not be right. However, the lecture also proves that some other more powerful people didn't escape. Besides, after the event, the prison repaired the sailing, which also could be an evidence that this experience could accur.
