The reading and the lecture discuss the accuracy of a memoir written by Chevalier de Seingalt about his life which also became a masterpiece of history about European society. The author believes that Chevalier created stories exaggerating the reality in order to achieve more fame. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that the memoir is both accurate and reliable overall.
First, the author comes up with the idea that Chevalier was not very wealthy as he translates into this memoir. It is mentioned that he borrowed large amounts of money from a Swiss merchant. So, if he was really rich Why did he need to borrow that money?. However, the professor argues that, in the beginning, Chevalier was poor and he started asking for money to people in order to buy assets and to then transform them into real money, thus generating real wealth.
Second, the author states that the precision of exposing the details from the conversations he had with Voltaire in the memoir is an object of doubts because he wrote them years later those occurred. Therefore, how could not have had remembered everything at the moment of writing. The professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that Chevalier in every conversation took notes with the purpose of then revising them. So, the memoir’s conversation details were referred from those notes.
Finally, the author contends that Chevalier’s prison escape, by making a hole in the ceiling and then climbing through it, was incredible and that its purpose was just enjoying the public with such a story. On the other hand, he could have escaped by asking help to his politician friends to bribe jailers. The professor, in contrast, posits that there have had more powerful people than him who have had more connection with politicians and could not have escaped from prison. Besides, it is known that the jailers needed to repair the ceiling of the prison after he escaped, so, it is clear that Chevalier escaped from the prison by climbing through the roof.
