The passage tells that the stories about Chevalier in his memoir are not true as there are various theories that have come across recently that question the authenticity of memoir written by him. However, the speaker cast doubt on the theories presented by the reader and give explanation for doing so.
First, the passage says that the Chevalier was not as rich as pictured in the memoir because there are proofs of him borrowing money from Swiss merchant. The professor contraindicates this point and says that it is true that when Chevalier was living in Switzerland, he was rich and used to spend huge amounts of cash on gambling and parties but he had property that had to be sold to get cash. So, meanwhile he borrowed money from merchant and was waiting to get cash from his sold property.
Second, the passage states that conversation between him and famous writer Voltaire cannot be accurate as it was written much later and the conversation had held many years earlier. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes the matter and argues that Chevalier used to write down all his conversations with Voltaire each night. Also, there are witnesses who have agreed to it and confessed that he used to refer his notes regularly while writing.
Third, the passage claims that the story of Chevalier’s escape from Venice’s prison is not true, he must have bribed the jailer to get free indeed. Conversely, the lecturer oppose the point and asserts that there were many of his friends in jail with him who were more influential than him but still they could not get free. In fact soon after the escape of Chevalier, jailer mended the ceiling of that prison. Therefore, this proves that whatever is written in the memoir is true.
