The lecture and essay discusses about efficient source for automobiles main power source. The lecturer provides three disadvantages of hydrogen powered cell as a source of power. Conversely, passage supports hydrogen powered cell as an effective power source for engine and provides three advantages of same.
Firstly, according to the article hydrogen cell does not have to rely on non-renewable resources such as gasoline or diesel. This is because, hydrogen cannot be easily depleted and can be derived from multiple resources. On the other hand, the orator posits that although, hydrogen is present in abundance, it has to be derived in pure form from water. Moreover, it's difficult to generate and store hydrogen at such low temperatures. It is not at all practical to use it as a source of power for engines.
Second, the author states that hydrogen cell power is environment friendly. It does not contribute to pollution, as, it's bi-product is water. Unlike gasoline or diesel whose, bi-product is carbon monoxide which, is a very harmful pollutant. The lecturer refutes this claim and states that even though cars with hydrogen cell power source would not emit carbon monoxide as a bi-product, the factories manufacturing these hydrogen cell will emit a large amount of pollutants. Thus, it would not solve the problem of pollution either.
Finally, the text mentions that hydrogen power cells are twice efficient and inexpensive than the internal combustion source. However, professor argues that hydrogen power cells require platinum in order to generate energy, which is a very expensive metal. Additionally, there aren't any successful replacement available for platinum as a chemical reactor with hydrogen in order to reduce the cost of hydrogen cells. So hydrogen cell has many demerits as a effective source of power for car engines.
