TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task
Both the reading and the lecture, discuss decreasing of otter population. The author brings up three different reasons to argue that environmental pollution is the main cause of this reduction. However the lecture disagrees, saying that the main reason of declining is predation, and refutes each reason of the author.
First, the passage asserts that water samples reveal that the volume of the toxic materials have increased in that area and this might cause to their decimation. The lecture challenges this claim by stating that if chemical pollution killed the otters why we didn't find their corpses beside the shore? So this clearly illustrates that marine species started to kill each other, and no other external factors influenced.
Second, the article claims that environmental pollution also affects other species’ life such as seals and sea lions, and population of these types also decreased. However the professor opposes this point by stating that human excessive huntings make some problems with other predators like whales, because their main foods become less and they started to preying other species. And that's why the number of them decreased.
Third, the reading mentions that irregular extinction of animals in various areas proves that pollutions play different roles depend on characteristics of the area. The professor contends that the accessibility of the location is important for predators, for instance owing to the big size of orca, it couldn't have access to shallow and rocky areas and that's why the population of otters is stable in these locations.
