TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c
The reading states that the sea otter population in the Alaskan Coast started decreasing and it caused much concern because of an important ecological role of these species in the coastal ecosystem. It claimed that two possible explanations for this decline can be provided including environmental pollution or predation. The lecturer, meanwhile, casts serious doubts on this claim by presenting some counter-arguments and examples. She believes that the predation can be the main reason and other explanations are not tangible enough to be supported.
To begin with, the reading passage claims that pollution can be the main cause that there were known sources of it along the Alaskan Coast, such as oil rigs and other sources of industrial chemical pollution. Thus, these chemicals may result in these species death. The lecturer, however, rejects this idea and believes that since no sea otter found dead on the nearby beaches, there is no evident to verify this claim. She states that this can only be justified by the predation effect in this area.
Second, although the reading passage declares that the asthe orca does not affect the decline in the sea mammals, the lecturer makes the argument that these whales are only fed by the sea otters. She comments that these whales after the disappearance of the sea otters changed their diet and started eating other sea mammals. Thus, the main reason for the decline of the other sea mammals and sea otters population is just the predation of the whales.
Third, in contrast to the reading article stating that ocean currents or other environmental factors may have created the irregular concentration of pollution along the coast and thus this makes the population of sea otters to be dwindled, the lecturer rejects this claim and says that this decline can only relate to the number of the orca whales in the area. She declares that orcas leave in large places and they cannot survive in the shallow and rocky places, so the main reason for this phenomenon is the presence of these whales. She also adds that observations prove this claim that sea otter population is more in rocky and shallow zones.
