According to the passage, nowadays people tend to read fewer books, particularly literature books such as novels and plays. This may stop them benefiting from several advantageous of the literature. However, the lecture challenges each point made in the reading passage and the lecturer believes that the damage is less than that is explained by the author of the passage.
First of all, the passage explains that a reduction in the tendency of people to read literature books would stop them benefiting from the intellectual stimulation which is believed to be only achieved through the literature. On the contrary, the lecture contradicts this idea. The lecturer states that intellectual stimulation is achievable through other kinds of books such as science books. She explains that a science book with a high quality is as creative as a novel and provides the reader with intellectual stimulation.
Second, the passage points out that nowadays many people spend their time on types of entertainment which are not as beneficial as literature. However, the lecturer believes that today the culture has changed and there are a plenty forms of culture available. In other words, a person does not waste his time by listening to a good music which is a part of a culture.
Third, the passage contends that as fewer people are reading literature books, the preference for investment in literature has declined which would vanish the talented writers who are not supported by audiences and investors. On the other hand, although the lecturer agrees with the idea that the number of readers has reduced, at the same time she asserts that the writing style of today’s writers has changed and modern literature is difficult to understand.
