TPO-12 - Integrated Writing Task Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. But we do not have many records of what she lo
The reading states that a professionally painted Jane Austen portrait, as a teenage girl, which is owned by a member of the Austen family has come up for sale and there are reasonable evident that she is the subject. The lecturer, however, casts serious doubts on this claim by representing some counter-arguments and examples. She believes that none of these evident are convincing enough and there are still many questions remained unanswered.
To begin with, although the reading declares that the Austen family members have accepted the claim that the girl in the portrait is Jane Austen, the lecturer makes the argument that this claim cannot be true because she had been dead almost 70 years ago and none of the family members that approved the validity of this portrait could have lived on those days to see her actual face.
Second, the article asserts that the face of the portrait vividly resembles the one in Cassandra's sketch. Besides, the passage claims that the features of the sketch are still identical to those of the portrait. Meanwhile, the lecturer refutes this claim and believes that this portrait may have related to some of Austen's cousins or the teenage children in their family.
Third, in contrast to the reading positing that the style of the painting is related to Ozias Humphrey, a society portrait painter who was recruited by Austen family and also the active years of the Humphrey is exactly coincide with the age of the girl in the painting, the lecturer thinks differently and insists that there is an evident which reveals a different result. He believes that according to the canvas of this painting, it could not be related to Austen because she was probably 27 on the day these kinds of canvases were sold.
