TPO-12 - Integrated Writing Task Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. But we do not have many records of what she lo

The reading and the listening are both about whether the portrait of a teenage girl resembles Jane Austin. The author believes that there are good reasons to believe that the young girl depicted in painting is Jane Austin in her adolescence. However, the professor casts doubts on the claims presented by the author. The professor states that the author's proposition is based on several unconscionable assumptions and asserting that the painting owned by a member of the Austen family as that of Jane Austin is purely injudicious.

To begin with, the author claims that several decades after Austen's death, her family gave permission to portray her in letters. He notes that Austen's family members have correctly recognized that the painting best depicts the author in her young age. The point is challenged by the professor. He states that it was 70 years past Austin's death that the family came to that decision. Furthermore, she points out that no family member at that time actually saw her, and recognizing her young portrait is not at all sensible.

In addition, the author contends that the full-length portrait of the author is similar to the amateur sketch made by the author's sister Cassandra. He argues that the sketch communicates definite details about author's face. However, the professor rebuts this point. He suggests that Austin's family was quite large, and that the painting could resemble any of her cousins and other teenagers in the family. Moreover, she notes that the portrait could depict Marie, the distant niece of Austin.

Finally, the author mentions about painter Ozais Humphrey who may have drawn that portrait when Austin was young, and that the artist was active during the same period. On the other hand, the professor explains that later in time after scrutinizing the painting the stamp confirmed that it was drawn by the artist named William Leg and that the painting was drawn in black canvas. The professor adds to his explanation the fact that at the time Jane was 27 years old, black canvas weren't sold in the market.

In conclusion, the professor effectively refutes each of the claims and theories presented in the passage.
