The lecturer in her talk has raised some questions over the benefits of salvage logging, explained in the text. The lecturer serially refutes each claim using examples of diverse nature.
First, text claims that salvage logging is good for the jungle, since it does not prevent the growth of new trees by occupying the space. The lecturer on the other hand, dismisses the argument by quoting, that tree decay is a natural process, which contributes immensely towards the improvement of soil nutrients in the jungle. Hence propelling future growth of trees.
Second, Lecturer argues that all the insects are not bad even spruce bark beetle lived in Alaskan forests for hundreds of years without causing any large scale damage. According to the lecturer the dead trees not only act as shelter for beetles and insects but also for different types animals and birds. These species are also equally important to the environment. Whereas text claims beetles severely damage healthy trees and dead trees help in their manifestation.
Finally, lecturers disagrees with the argument of economic benefits of the salvage logging as mentioned in the text. Text claims that salvage logging helps in providing additional lumber to industry and creating job opportunities for local residents. Lecturers disagrees by quoting that there are high costs involved in salvaging logging, particularly through usage of high end vehicles or even helicopter. In addition to it, lecturer says that, quantity of salvaged good might not worth the effort as after fire only small quantity of good wood can be salvaged, hence it could prove costly and futile exercise. Furthermore, lecturer claims that salvage logging needs specialized skills. Local residents might not be expert in salvage logging hence the jobs will be created for people from outside as well as since forest fire is not a frequent phenomenon hence the jobs can be temporary in nature.
