TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec

In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture deal with the cane toad, which is a large amphibian species native to Central and South America. Regarding this topic, the author asserts that there are three possible ways to prevent the population of the cane toad in Australia from increasing. However, the lecturer contradicts the author’s assertion by saying that the three ways would be unsuccessful and be dangerous to the environment.
First of all, according to the lecture, it is unconvincing that building a national fence would not be able to prevent the number of the cane toad from increasing. The lecturer mentions that it is sufficiently possible that the young toads or eggs still can move to the inside of the fence, which can cause to multiply the number of the cane toad. Consequently, the way to make a national fence does not an effective way to reduce the population of the cane toad. This challenges the author’s argument that a national fence is able to ban the population of toads from spreading by giving the similar example of preventing the spread of rabbits in Australia.
Secondly, the lecture goes on to say that allowing volunteers to capture and destroy the toads is able to harm to the toads but also dangerous to other species, this is because if the volunteers are not trained, they would deconstruct frogs’ habitats, which can be dangerous to them to survive. In this regard, using volunteers to prohibit the toads from increasing does not easily to be successful without negative influences to other species. This counters the author’s view point that the method of using volunteers can be an effective way to reduce the number of the toads because they can easily capture the toads using simple traps and the young toads and their eggs are simply destroyed by the volunteers.
Lastly, the lecturer points out that it is problematic that in order to control of the population of the toads, using the virus caused a disease is useful. To be specific, the toads in Australia frequently are transported to the America by researchers or some people who want to get the toad as a pet. Thus, there is possibility that if the infected toads are transported to the America, then they would play a vital role in the collapse of the native toads, which can lead to a disaster to the eco-system in America. This rebuts the author’s claim that the population of the toads can be easily controlled by the infection from the virus invented by researchers.
