TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task
The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insects. Unfortunately, the toad multiplied rapidly, and a large cane toad population now threatens small native animals that are not pests. Several measures have been proposed to stop the spread of the cane toad in Australia.
One way to prevent the spread of the toad would be to build a national fence. A fence that blocks the advance of the toads will prevent them from moving into those parts of Australia that they have not yet colonized. This approach has been used before: a national fence was erected in the early part of the twentieth century to prevent the spread of rabbits, another animal species that was introduced in Australia from abroad and had a harmful impact on its native ecosystems.
Second, the toads could be captured and destroyed by volunteers. Cane toads can easily be caught in simple traps and can even be captured by hand. Young toads and cane toad eggs are even easier to gather and destroy,since they are restricted to the water. If the Australian government were to organize a campaign among Australian citizens to join forces to destroy the toads, the collective effort might stop the toad from spreading.
Third, researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations. This virus will be specially designed: although it will be able to infect a number of reptile and amphibian species, it will not harm most of the infected species; it will specifically harm only the cane toads. The virus will control the population of cane toads by preventing them from maturing and reproducing.
Both reading and lecture discuss the methods of removing cane toad, which intentionally bring to Australia to protect farmers' crop. According to the reading, the author provides 3 competing methods to prevent spreading of the cane toad in Australia, including building a national fence, collecting by hands of volunteers, and developing a new virus to control cane toad. The lecture, on the other hand, rejects all three methods and brings up three reasons to support its idea.
Firstly, the reading asserts that building a national fence would be an effective way to stop the spread of cane toad. The lecturer, on the contrary, refutes this method by arguing that a fence would not stop spreading of the cane toad. Moreover, toad eggs and young toads live on the river an stream and no matter how is a fence they can pass the fence and go through it furthermore the river and stream would carry them to the other parts of Australia. Therefore, building a new fence would not be an effective method.
Secondly, The reading passage contends that volunteers can capture and destroy the toads by hands or in simple traps. The professor, however, says that the toads could have trapped by volunteers but may have negative effects. Moreover, the professor casts doubt on this way by saying that untrained volunteers may inadvertently hurt native frogs because the recognizing toad cone apart from frog is very difficult. Thus, the speaker rejects this method by providing the rational reasons.
Finally, the article points out that introducing a new virus to infect the toad cane would be a proper method. The lecturer, in contrast, asserts that this method is a bad idea and would be harmful to America. the professor says that because some of the harmed species transport, which are suffered from a disease-causing virus, by researcher or pet collector to America this virus would affect the cane toads in America and destroy them. Moreover, this destroying bring about an ecological disaster for America and if the cane toad eliminate, the whole ecology will be suffered.
