The passage discusses the overall bird population decline because of the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and chemical pesticide use. The professor, on the other hand, unconvinced with the arguments assumed in the passage and provides her thoughts.

Firstly, the author states, in the passage, those settlement activities, due to the increasing human population, such as more home, malls, and offices, decrease the suitable areas for birds. However, the professor suggests that although several types of bird species drop the number of members in the population, there are other species can survive and even increase their population size in human settlements rather than urban sites. She exemplifies one of those species as pigeons.

Secondly, the passage points out the agricultural activities which destroy the rural areas that are habitats for birds. The professor contrasts the passage view by providing today's lesser agriculture, and thus, agriculture is not an appropriate point she thinks. Moreover, she explains that needing a wilderness area is not proper because of new crops in the fields. In other words, birds can habitat those fields, too.

Thirdly, the increased chemical pesticides for protecting the crops from agricultural and home garden pests harm the bird populations, since the pest, indeed insects, get into water into the food chain for birds. In contrary, the lecturer disclaims traditional chemic pesticide use is not applicable in new farms in two ways. The first way is using pesticides that are less toxic, even toxic for insects, they are not giving damage to birds. The second way is using pest-resistant crops which modified genetically, they also don't harm birds.
