In the reading passage, the author introduces a less risky way to start a business, which is franchising. Franchising is defined in the text as getting a licence from a big company to use their name and services, so that small businesses can benefit. On the other hand, the lecturer contrasts the author with their reasons. Here are those contradictions.
First of all, reading explains how hard it is to find reliable good suppliers for new businesses, instead they would contact suppliers that franchised companies prefer. Whereas, the lecturer points out a study which showed big companies are forcing franchises to buy only specific products from specific suppliers, whose products are overpriced. Although they could buy cheaper, but equivalent, products from other suppliers, companies won’t allow them. Hence, small businesses would end up not earning much.
Secondly, the author was encouraging franchising with lower cost for advertisements. In contrast, the woman in the lecture argued that those advertisements promote the brand name and their own products, not specifically their business. In fact, they would benefit very little from these advertisements.
Lastly, security was discussed in the passage. Although the author was convinced that it would be less risky to get a franchise license than starting a new business, the lecturer disagreed with this. She mentioned that there is an alternative option for who wants to start a new business, which is buying an established, independent company. Furthermore, she supported her claim by explaining that the success rate of companies is twice as much as other companies.
Overall, where the reading passage encourages franchising, the lecturer disagrees with them.
