The passage discusses the main reason for the sea otter decline as environmental pollution rather than predation by given several points of views. The professor, on the other hand, casts doubt on the main reason for the decline, and provide some alternative views.
Firstly, the author claims the pollution theory by the increased level of chemicals in the water samples which leads to a decrease the otter's resistance to life-threatening infections. However, the lecturer disproves the theory by providing the inconsistency for the absence of sea otter on the beaches. Additionally, she suggests that the absence is more likely to because of predation.
Secondly, the passage assumes pollution has affected the entire ecosystem, and thus, orcas, a large predatory of otters, started to hunt larger prays, such as whales. In fact, this indicates predation is not the primary reason for otter decline. The professor, on the contrary, states that orcas changed their diet and eat all small sea mammals, such as seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Moreover, she suggests that as the dead bodies of otters are not seen, if they hunted by orcas, which consistent with the first point the teacher mentioned before.
Thirdly, the author explains the uneven population pattern of sea otters by ocean currents and environmental factors. On the other hand, the lect claims the uneven pattern by focusing on the locations of orcas can access in which shallow and rocky, since the number of animals is stable in those regions. In fact, orcas are not able to swim through and eat the prays, small sea mammals.
