In the reading, the author claims that increasing the United Stated human population at the steady rate causes people to destroy the wildlife, especially birds by creating more lands for agriculture and using more pesticides for crops. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecture totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
First, the reading argues that as the population increase, the need of people for constructing homes and destroying the birds' habitat enhance. Conversely, the speaker disagrees with this point. According to her, although urbanization decreases the population of some birds, it will provide larger habitat for other kinds of birds. For instance, people sometimes complain about increasing the numbers of pigeons and other kinds of birds. Also, at the city, the number of falcons which prey on the rodents and pigeons, have increased too. So, increasing population causes some types of birds to live in a larger habitat.
Second, the reading asserts that expansion of human population more land should be provided for cultivating to make more food. As a result, farmers should destroy the birds' habitat more and more. However, the lecturer refutes this reason by explaining that In the United States, people try to utilize less land for agriculture. They cultivate new and more productive crops per unit of land. So, there is no need to use more land for making more foods.
Finally, the author claims that pesticides that farmers use for their crops are hazardous for the birds due to the fact that these poisonous chemicals go to the food chains of the birds. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on this standpoint. She posits that people are aware of the effects of the pesticides. In order that, they make two solutions. first, they have developed new and much less toxic pesticides for their crops. Second, they make efforts to grow more pest-resistant crops. Regarding the benefits of using pest-resistant crops, there is no need to use pesticides for crops. It turns out; utilizing more pesticides cause the birds' population to reduce.
