The article states that birds populations will continue to decline and provides three reasons of supports. However, the professor refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading avers that since human populations and settlements continue to expand, birds natural habitats will continue to disappear as a result. The professor, on the other hand, explains that this point is true but only for some types of birds. She explains that building, housing areas are better habitats for large species of birds, such as seagulls, pigeons, hawks, falcons and so on. Therefore, the professor concludes the decline in birds populations is going to be uniform in the future, as the author would like us to believe, but some populations may shrink, but others will grow.
Second, the article claims that the growth of agriculture, as response to growing health populations, will also result in the further destruction of birds habitats. Conversely, the professor disagree with point by stating that the increase in agricultural activities are done by using less lands. The agriculture growth has already increased by introducing of more productive varieties of crops. These new crops produce more food per unit of area, so there is no need to convert and use wilderness areas for agricultural purpose.
Third, the reading posits that chemical pesticides gets into the water and into the food chains for birds where they can harm birds. Even they do not kill them, they affect their reproduction process. The professor refutes this point by saying people are aware of dangerous of tradition pesticides . Now, pesticides have been developed and will continue to do so in the future. This new pesticides differ from that in the past in two distinctive features: The first one, new and less toxic than before . Also, develop more pest resistant crops that actually become less attractive to pests. Therefore, people will reduce the need for chemical pesticides. Moreover, these crops do not cause any harm for birds growing pesticides that resistant to pests, in addition to, become less harm to birds species which is pretty important.
