TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particular. Unfortunately for b

The passage states that due to the increasing human population and their demand for food has a harmful effect on the wildlife of United States. Most particularly, the bird population has decreased considerably and will continue to decrease in the future. The speaker counters this by saying that it is true that the growing human population has had many adverse effects on the bird population but there are certain advantages that came up with the new advancements of human settlements.

Firstly, the passage states that since the human population grows, there grows a vital demand for shelter and business. Shelter is provided by inhabiting forest lands, wetlands and grasslands. These lands are also used to build malls and other means of entertainment and business for people. It ultimately results in a loss of natural habitats for birds. But, the speaker contradicts by putting the example of pigeons on streets, or hawks and falcons preying on these pigeons, which are found in the human settlements. This proves that the birds get a larger habitat to live in, even after forest lands are used to build human shelter.

Secondly, the passage suggests that due to the growing population the demand for food naturally increases. This results in growth of agricultural activities in the forest areas, hence, loss of birds habitat. The speaker has another answer to this when she explains that United States have already come up with a solution of using crops that are so productive that they do not need a lot of land to grow in. This gives rise to more varieties of crops grown in a smaller land area.

Ultimately, pesticides use obviously increases with the increased agricultural practices. As stated in the passage, this causes contamination of water, poisons the insects over which it is used. This further, poisons the birds who feed on these insects or contaminated water, reducing the bird population. But according to the speaker, this problem was a part of history. Keeping the birds in mind, people came up with two solutions to this problem. First, the new pesticides are being used in the agricultural fields now which are much less toxic. Second, there is a growing trend to grow pest resistant crops which are unattractive for the birds to hover over them and get themselves poisoned.
