In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States—birds in particular. Unfortunately for birds, these trends are likely to continue, with the result that the number of birds in the United States will necessarily decline.
The lecturer challenges the topic proposed in the reading that the number of birds in the united states will necessarily decline. And she thinks that these arguments are unconvincing.
First, the passage suggests that birds natural habitats will continue to disappear due to expansion of human populations and settlements. However, the professor points out that it would provide larger and better habitats for birds. some birds would increase and stand on the street and some hawks would prey on other birds such as pigeons. Thus, some birds' population would shrink whereas other birds' population would increase.
Second, the essay supposes that agricultural activities must increase to keep pace with the growing human population. But the lecturer supports that there are less and less land which used for agriculture every year in the united states. And new crops are introduced to supply for food, so people need not to destroy wilderness area.
Third, the article indicates that the use of chemical pesticides will also increase. Nevertheless, the professor argues that people aware the harm of traditional pesticides, so they make some changes. new pesticides are developed that have no harmful effects on birds. Moreover, pest-resistant crops are planted, which would reduce the need of pesticides that harm birds.
