Torreya taxifoha trees are rapidly diying in their native environments, the passage suggests three ways in which Torreya trees can be saved. However, the lecturer believes that any of the 3 options suggested by the passage would either not help in saving Torreya trees or could lead to undesirable outcomes such as putting other species at risk.

The microenvironments in which Torreya trees survived for thousands of years are being affected by the changes in surrounding climate. This is most probably because of global warming, causing damper places withing the microenvironment to become dryer and dryer. Hence, the reading passage’s suggestion of reestablishing Torreya tress at places they once used to occupy won’t help, as the microenvironment has changed.

Assisted migration can lead to unpredictable outcomes, once a species at risk called Black Lopus was moved north to help increase its numbers. However, the new environment became too favourable for Black Lopus, rapidly expanding it’s population while putting other plant species at risk. Similar thing can happer with Torreya trees if moved to more cooler places in North.

Another approach the passage suggests is to preserve the Torreya trees in research centeres in controlled environment, such an approach may work in the short run, but in the long run such trees won’t be able to withstand diseases. To tolerate diseases the trees should be in large numbers with genetically diverse population, typically a forest provides such an environment. However in research centers only few Torreya trees can be planted, which decrease their tolerances to disseases and could lead to their death in the long run.

None of the solutions provided by the reading passage can help save the dwindling population of Torreya trees. Their native environments are no longer same as they used to be, moving them to more favourable environments can lead to population explosion and trying to preserve Torreya trees in research center would make them succeptible to diseases. The lecturer casts strong doubts on all the solutions suggested by the passage.
