TPO 18 the Torreya taxifoha
Both, the lecture and the reading, talk about different ways to cope the extinction of the torreya Taxifoha in the state of Florida. While the reading presents three possible solutions, the lecturer explains that they are questionable and refute each reason, casting doubts in the author's beliefs.
Firstly, the reading suggests resow the torreya in the same lands where they used to lived. However, the orator contradicts this point by saying that this is horrible option, owing to the micro climate in those areas have changed, due to the global warming. As a result, the conditions, where the torreya used to thrive are not available any more. Contrarily, the weather is drier now than was in the past.
Secondly, the text claims that torreya should be moved to a completely different location, where exist similar condition to these were they used to live. Notwithstanding, the professor disproves this idea using other similar case as example. He says that the black local tree was relocated and it caused serious problem in the new ecosystem. Consequently, some species disappeared and others migratory animals suffer important issues.
Finally, the author suggests to preserve the seeds of this tree in research centers. Nonetheless, the lecturer remark the unconvincing the weakness of this argument highlighting that for a long-term survivor the specie needs a wide genetic variety. The centers don't have enough capacity to keep the number of seed necessary to overcome that problems. As a result, the survivor of that specie would be in risk.
