The article and the lecture are both about "let it burn" policy, which means allowing a natural fire to burn until it burns out by itself. In the article, the writer talks about the extensive negative consequences of such a practice. On the other hand, the lecturer considers that the ideas stated in the passage are somewhat inaccurate when compared to reality.
First, natural fires are an essential part of the ecosystem, because they contribute to nature's renewal. In contrast, the writer affirms that various trees and vegetation were totally destroyed or seriously affected. However, the speaker presents evidence on how this was advantageous for the appearance of a greater vegetation diversity. Smaller plants grew and extended because they had access to more sunlight, and different types of seed were able to germinate because of the heat generated by the fire. Thus, the speaker offer a credible standpoint against the passage's claims.
Second, animals' population have increased and new species integrated in the new environment. The writer says that many animals disappeared and the food chain was seriously damaged. Anyway, the lecturer provides proofs that the opposite has happened. In other words, other species of animals migrated to these areas attracted by a better natural environment. Consequently, these new animals have also attracted predator, so the food chain has improved. This is a strong counter-argument that contradicts the article.
Third, natural fires do not occur often, but from times to times due to extraordinary meteorological conditions such as drought and strong winds. This comes as a response for the author's concerns regarding the local economy. The Yellowstone fire took place thirty years ago, being an isolated case since it has never happened again. Moreover, the tourists visited the natural park the very next year, so the local businesses were not affected on long term. So, the writers' fears regarding economy are not viable. In conclusion, the author and the lecturer seem to be in disagreement regarding this theme.
