The article states that planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits and explain three such briefly. However the professor see problems associated with genetically modified trees and refutes each of the benefit from the passage.
First, the reading claims that genetically modified trees are designed to be hardier than nature trees. The professor refutes this point by stating that genetically modified trees tested under only a few conditions and if those were challenged by different environmental issue, all of the trees cab be affected. This is because the genetically modified trees are uniform, while nature trees vary significantly in genetics which allows some trees to survive.
Second, the article posit that genetically modified trees promises more economic benefits to those who grows them. However, the professor says that there are hidden costs associated with growing genetically modified trees. She states that seed of genetically modified plants cost more than the natural ones. Furthermore, the private companies which own patents for these trees charge from farmers for each seed or tree they plant, in contrast natural trees are almost free.
Third reading says that, genetically modified trees can prevent overexploitation of wild trees. The professor opposes this point by explaining how the genetically modified trees can be harmful for natural environment. According to professor and the passage these plants grow faster and aggressively. We also learn from the professor that genetically modified trees are planted among nature trees, which causes them to compete for resource like sunlight, nutrients from soil. Which can be detrimental to growth of natural trees.
